Playing for Change
A friend sent me this video and I thought it cool enough to share. Cool, and also a worthy cause. Check out the Playing for Change website here and learn more about the project.

And as usual, check out the video on my music video page.
Playing for Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.

The Playing For Change Community is a group of artists and inspired people who have come together to connect the world through music.

Yodeling Japanese
Some stuff is too cool or unusual to keep to myself. Today's exhibit of the bizarre, again courtesy of Hee Haw, is Japanese country singer/yodeler Eddie (Eddy) Fukano.

The first time I saw Eddie Fukano, I had one of those "double-take" moments. Let's face it, the world of country music is not exactly chock full of non-white Americans. Certainly, there are exceptions. Charlie Pride is the most notable and of course Ray Charles took his turn at singing country. I'm sure Eddie turned more than a few heads during his tenure as an American country artist.

Roy Clark Rocks Vol 2
Roy ClarkObservant visitors to my site might notice a trend. My music video player is dominated by Roy Clark and guests on the Late Show with David Letterman. This is an easy explanation. I don't generally track down performances, I let them happen. I like Dave, and Hee Haw is sort of a guilty (nostalgic) pleasure of mine. As I've said before and will say again, "Roy Clark rocks." And Dave has the occasional page-worthy guest.

The newest addition to my video page is Roy Clark paying tribute to the great Duke Ellington. However, like a lot of great songs, "Caravan" is often erroneously attributed solely to The Duke. The music was actually penned by Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol, with words by Irving Mills. Let's give credit where credit is due. ("Take 5" is another classic mis-attribution. Ask most people who wrote it, and the easy answer is Dave Brubeck. It was actually written by Paul Desmond, saxophonist in the quartet.)

Check out the video on my music video page. Enjoy!

Riddle and Phelps

I love these guys! I can't explain my fascination, whether I find them sincerely talented, ridiculous, or inspired and ballsy. In the end it doesn't matter. I could watch them all day. I selected one snippet that I feel best exemplifies the variety of their typical Hee Haw performance in one solitary clip, but I'd need to offer the whole library of their efforts to give you the full impact.

Community Jazz(y) Ensemble
What do you get when you cross a brilliantly talented, classically trained flautist; a country-blues-rock guitarist; a Zeppelinesque heavy-rock drummer; and your humble rock/blues influenced, bebop lovin' bassist narrator?

Check out the final result on my Music - Video page, in the My Videos section at the bottom.

Bruce Rocks the SuperBowl
I'm not a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. But I admire and respect the man and his work. I found a new respect for him a few years ago when my friend Steve turned me onto his live performances. No brilliant flash of technical prowess, no blinding instrumental virtuosity, just tons of gut, heart, and soul. Technical ability is only impressive for so long. Without some substance behind it, it grows old quickly. Soul and passion have infinite sustainability.

Not being a Bruce-ite, I am not qualified to comment on this performance. I'll just say that I'll take a Bruce performance over any over-the-top pop star any day of the week.

Daily Wisdom

"The best grooves have conversations going on, like little subtleties that kick them up to the next level and add excitment. Simplicity is what make you tap into that, because when you leave space, you listen... When you hear what everyone else is doing you can answer them."
